Kosher means that a food is “fit or proper” according to Jewish dietary laws. These laws specify the types of food that may be eaten, and provide strict guidelines for preparing, processing and inspecting these foods.
Kosher certification is seen by many as a quality standard or a means of easy identification of certain allergens, additives or ingredients.Most foods are potentially easy to certify as kosher. The key is the auditing of food producers that seek kosher certification.
The process of kosher certification has been radically affected by deep changes in the food industry and by the fact that more than 80% of the products offered by the industry contain pre-processed ingredients. Industrialisation presents marvelous opportunities, but the inexorable pace of change in industrial procedures and the complexity of foodstuffs and ingredients also present significant challenges for the kosher certification process.
This short course will give a good overview of the laws of kashrut, and detail the requirements and process for kosher certification by the Union of Orthodox Synagogues in South Africa.

Invoicing will be handled by Sharon Bolel on behalf of SAAFFI. Invoices will be emailed in response to bookings. Only those who have paid in time will be able to attend.
The cost includes light refreshments before and during each presentation, parking, a certificate of attendance issued by SAAFFI and course notes where applicable.
